Preserving digital records after fraud
Organise messages, URLs, original files and timestamps so that technical observations remain understandable and traceable.

Keep the source before creating a summary
A screenshot can be useful, but it may omit the sender details or the surrounding conversation. Save original messages and documents where feasible.
Record how and when an item was obtained. Do not imply that a copied image proves more than its visible content.
Explain every technical step
A SHA-256 digest can help confirm whether a file changed between two measurements. It cannot establish the truth of the file’s statements or the identity of its author.
Separate working copies from original material, and note which software performed each calculation.
Prepare for independent review
Arrange evidence chronologically and label uncertainties explicitly. A well-structured index is often more helpful than a folder full of unlabelled captures.
Vigifraude can discuss technical organisation within its IT remit; legal admissibility and formal evidential work require the appropriate professional advice.
